Project Schedule

The World Bank’s Enterprise Analysis Unit publishes the Formal Sector Enterprise Surveys (WBES) around the world on a three-year rotation basis. Data collection for the surveys generally takes place in the year prior to, and in the year of, publication. The most recently published WBES in each economy shown below will be used in the World Bank’s flagship report, Business Ready (B-Ready). The team also carries out Informal Sector Enterprise Surveys, Micro Enterprise Surveys, and other business surveys.

Survey types are:

  • Enterprise Surveys: a standard establishment-level survey that is representative of the non-agricultural, non-extractive private sector, covering registered establishments with 5 or more employees. The Methodology page contains technical details, including sectoral coverage.

  • Informal Sector Enterprise Surveys: a survey of unregistered businesses. All business activities are covered, including any production or service activity that is sold, traded or bartered with another party.

  • Micro Enterprise Surveys: a survey of Micro Enterprises – registered establishments with less than five employees.

Survey phases are:

  • Preparation: phase before the start of procurement.

  • Procurement: phase regarding hiring a survey firm via a competitive selection process.

  • Fieldwork: face-to-face interviews with business owners or top managers are underway.

  • Published: survey data are available on the WBES data portal, and the timeline for the next round of data collection is given.
